New Zealand New WoF rules (from Nov 2026)

New Zealand New WoF rules (from Nov 2026)

From November 2026, changes to the WoF system will affect renewal intervals and some other rules. The changes will be phased in according to a vehicle’s age and WoF renewal date. The phasing can be a little complicated, so this page compares the current and new rules based on NZTA information.

Changes for vehicles aged 4–14 years are being phased in (details)

From 1 November 2026
Applies to: vehicles first registered anywhere in the world on or after 1 November 2019
WoF every year → WoF every 2 years
From 1 November 2027
Applies to: vehicles first registered anywhere in the world between 1 November 2013 and 31 October 2019
WoF every year → WoF every 2 years
⚠️ Vehicle age is based on the date it was first registered anywhere in the world! WoF age brackets are based on the date it was first registered anywhere in the world (not the year it was manufactured or the date it was registered in NZ).
Example:A vehicle manufactured and first registered in Japan in 2010, then registered in NZ in 2020, was first registered in 2010. By 2026 it is 16 years old and falls into the “14–26 years” category, so it needs a WoF every year.

Changes for motorcycles

  • First registered before 2000: Every 6 months → Every year
  • First registered from 2000: Every year → No change

WoF inspections will cover additional items

Systems such as automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist: warning lights for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)will now be checked

Note: If a relevant warning light is on, the vehicle may fail its WoF.

Penalties are increasing

Offence Current New
Expired WoF(more than 2 months overdue) $200 $350
Non-compliant tyres or wheels $150 $350
Maximum fine(by court order) $600 $1,000
Important: Drivers remain responsible for keeping their vehicle roadworthy at all times, even while its WoF is current. Regular checks and maintenance remain important.

We have also created a simple simulator so you can see how your vehicle’s future WoF renewal intervals may change over the next 10 years. Give it a try.
Check the first registration year and WoF expiry date on the Rego card and WoF label displayed on your vehicle’s windscreen:Rego card and WoF label.

You can check the month of first registration by searching the vehicle’s registration number on a website called CarJam.

Vehicle age is calculated from the difference between the inspection month and the first registration month.
